Holiday Message Life is so full of wonderful surprises but is is also so full of painful memories. Embracing death and destruction is one of the most difficult tragedies that we will experience in our lives. Last month one of the horse barns in our township was destroyed in flames which resulted in the death of some horses. Since our farms and animals are so dear to all of us, especially with all the time and memories we share with our horses, I want to ask each of you to say a special prayer for the family of the Tottens in East Amwell as we share in their pain. Last week we also had to put one of our 2003 fillies to sleep because of what we believe is the result of a fall on the ice the winter prior. She had suffered from motor problems in the hind leg on and off for many months and ultimately lost control of her movements in a very rapid 3 week progression of symptoms. We believe this to be a case of “wobblers”. She was very beautiful and we will certainly miss her. So how do we look forward through pain to find rationale to these tragic parts of life? It is the same when we lose a friend or member of our family and mourn their loss. The more we live the more pain we will certainly experience and thank goodness to the healing powers of time and the rich memories we can look back upon to help us through these periods. Certainly if we had the choice we would like to limit the painful periods. However, if we share in the pain we also share in life. So it is these precious memories which help us go forward and to also look ahead to other memories which we can fill our scrapbooks of life with. I think it would be less attractive to live in a bubble which cannot be ruptured in any way. It would seem that the bumps and bruises we encounter prepares us to truly appreciate those genuine moments of endearment whether it be with our pets, horses, friends, or families. And so as I continue through life, although the pain hurts deeply, the rewards of having truly lived a full life with more memories yet to come, is something we are truly lucky to be open to….at any age. Merry Christmas and may your holidays be stacked with precious moments. 11-26-04 |
