Equine Tip of the Month | |||
Life Experiences Life’s experiences become more visible as you travel through your lifespan. Each year you have the opportunity to view the obvious which was not apparent the year before. In this respect, aging is a pleasure! Equine relationships and human-equine handling techniques, or “horse whispering” are in vogue in our generation and decade. Having the opportunity to spend the last 6 years breeding horses, I can say that there are many paraellels between equine behaviour and human behaviour that are not fully visibile to all equestrians. First of all, we harbor so many assumptions in life. In the equine world, we dealt with the assumptions that we would never want to have a young horse to train because of the many requirements and inherent unpredicatability of the untrained horse. In 1999 when I first got my 6mos old stallion, I was counseled by all professionals to ensure that he be kept separate from any other horses especially mares. This was supposed to result in facil handling as he matures. I have always socialized my stallion with other horses. Over the years, I now encourage all to be aware of assumptions you may have, both in your personal lives and also in your equine pursuits. My Stallion, is the epitome of the type of horse I hope to always have in my life. Not only is he confident, he is truly a leader. He is turned out with a mare who has had her ovaries out and acts like a gelding. He ALWAYS is aware of where the other horses are on site. He requires respect and returns respect with equal confidence and trust as provided to him. He is a pleasure to work with: engaging, confident, eager to please, and responds to endearments. He is kind and aware, and intelligent, and learns quickly. If I had listened to all the concerns that were provided when I first mentioned my intentions of keeping a stallion, I would have truly missed a tremendous learning opportunity in life and with horses. The bond we have is much like having a dog. There is tremendous reciprocity. As much as I have taught him, he has equally taught me and I have had the opportunity to grow. I encourage everyone to take advantage of acknowledging assumptions we are faced with in life and question them with clear thinking and proceed to explore what opportunities for growth that lie ahead when our assumptions are biased. We encourage all equestrians to experience the partnership of raising a young horse and the gratification of the reciprocity you will receive from your equine experience! It is one of “life’s–lessons,” equal to being in harmony with nature! -Ann del Campo- | ||||
